Break Heavy Clinical Topics Into Daily Steps

Looking at a Med-Surg and/or Pharmacology textbook of 500 pages prior to taking the HESI-RN test could be overwhelming to anyone.

Your natural inclination when there is an impending test coming up is always to study. Your natural reaction would always be trying to study entire chapters about cardiovascular disorders and renal failures in one caffeine-filled day. However, there is a sad truth that all nursing students learn: cramming might work for a general history test, but it certainly will not work in a nursing test.

This is because a nursing test is not a simple memorization process. It requires the ability to analyze certain things, make decisions on priorities, and make important clinical decisions in a timely manner. When your brain is overwhelmed by too much information, you simply cannot think clearly.


The Problem: Why Over-Studying Doesn't Work for Nursing Students

Cognitive overload happens when you try to digest 500 pages all at once in your head.

In nursing education, different topics relate to each other. Trying to remember side effects of cardiac drugs without knowing how blood circulates in the heart first is impossible; you will end up remembering random information but not understanding the mechanism behind it.

Hesi-rn questions will require a NGN case study and your priority action. For that, memorized facts won't work.

Phase 1: Chunking Content (Step-Wise Layering)

Rather than approaching a large clinical subject as a single, continuous wall of text, split it into four separate layers. Never move on to the next layer until you feel comfortable with the previous one.

  1. Step 1: Anatomy & Physiology Foundations
  2. Prior to opening up your Med-Surg notes on Heart Failure, spend 15 minutes learning about normal cardiac physiology. Ask yourself the following questions: Where is blood flow directed? What do normal pressures appear to be?
  3. Step 2: Pathophysiology
  4. Now introduce the problem. What happens when things go wrong with the tissue or organ? If the left ventricle fails, where does fluid accumulate? (Answer: In the lungs). The "why" will help you remember the symptoms with ease.
  5. Step 3: Nursing Interventions & Safety
  6. After you understand the pathophysiology, you can examine what nurses do. What position is the patient to be in? Which lab values are monitored? What are some key medication considerations?
  7. Step 4: Priority Questions
  8. Finally, determine how the exam will test you. Who do you see first? Which doctor order would you question?

Phase 2: "Considerate" Pacing

10 hours of studying per day seems pretty impressive online, but it produces diminishing results. Your brain is similar to a muscle, meaning that after a few hours of concentration, your brain stops taking in information.

In order to preserve your cognitive power and achieve long-lasting retention:

Establish Limits per Day: Limit the number of difficult topics that you read every day to 1 to 2 topics, like Heart Failure + Diuretics on Monday and COPD + Bronchodilators on Tuesday.

Apply Time Blocks: Spend 45 minutes working and then take a mandatory 10-minute break, stepping away from your desk and getting some water.

Be Aware of Your Mental Fatigue: After three hours of learning when you start re-reading the same sentence four times in a row, stop. It will be only pseudo-productivity.


Phase 3: Feedback Loops - Immediate Practice

What nursing students do wrong is to reserve all practice tests till the last day of the week or even the last day before the exam.

Rather, create a feedback loop in your daily schedule where you complete at least 10-15 practice tests right after you learn something such as Heart Failure.


Why Immediate Feedback Works

Blind Spot Detection: It allows you to know if you have really learned the concept or you simply remembered the terms.

Exam Endurance: It makes you familiar with NGN question types such as matrix grid, drop down, and highlight options, little by little.

Misconception Fixing: You learn the correct rationale for the question you got wrong right away so that wrong information does not become ingrained in your mind.

Nursing school is more like running a marathon than a race. This is because you develop the analytical mind you need for all your nursing tests when you dissect large clinical ideas into easily predictable tasks on a daily basis. Just keep it simple, follow your routine and peel off layers.
